Miami Heat Tickets - Building A Powerhouse

LeBron James may have shifted the power of the NBA to Miami when he announced his

decision to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in South Beach for the foreseeable future. These three star players will join forces in an effort to create a dynasty, and it could very well work. However, you can't play basketball with three players, so there is still plenty of work to do as far as adding complementary pieces and filling out the roster.

While James, Wade and Bosh will sell plenty of Miami Heat tickets, they'll need role players to help them win a championship. As of July 9, the only other player on the Miami roster was point guard Mario Chalmers. Let's assume that Chalmers is going to start for the Heat at the point, Wade at the two, LeBron at the three and Bosh at the four. This still leaves the team with the charge of landing a starting center and an entire bench. This will be no easy task, as landing this three-headed monster this offseason will presumably eat up all of the team's salary cap space. That means that the Heat will have to sign each additional player they add to the team to a minimum contract, which severely limits the pool of players that the Heat can select from.

One selling point that Heat have in convincing a player to accept a minimum contract is the idea of winning a championship and how great players make role players better. This could be enough to entice older players that still have something left in the tank to take less money and join Miami in their title quest. The Heat can also use the lure of South Beach to help their case, as the weather, nightlife and absence of income tax are all things that can be used to recruit players.

Some players that have already been mentioned as potential targets include Jason Williams, Mike James, Earl Watson, Keyon Dooling, Raja Bell, Larry Hughes, Flip Murray, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Devean George, Brian Skinner, Damien Wilkins, Trenton Hassel, Jarvis Hayes, Eddie House and Ime Udoka. Of that bunch, the best options are probably Williams, Watson, Bell, George, Skinner, Wilkins, House, Ilgauskas and Udoka.

Williams would offer a backup point guard that can shoot, Watson a steady point guard presence, Bell a shooter and perimeter defender, George a bench scorer with size, Skinner a big body in the paint, Wilkins a bench scorer, House a shooter, Ilgauskas a big man and Udoka a solid all-around bench guy. The team should also look to re-sign center Joel Anthony or see if they can convince Earl Barron to rejoin the squad. Something to also keep in mind is that the Heat also have their three second-round picks, Dexter Pittman, Javaris Varnado and Da'Sean Butler, to help fill out the roster.

As far as free agents go, players that can shoot and big men will probably be the two priorities for this team. They'll need to find a starting center than can rebound and defend, as well as players to hit open shots created by the three stars. Neither James nor Wade is a great three-point shooter, so landing guys like Raja Bell and Eddie House would really help in that department. Bell has expressed that Miami is his first choice, but that was before the team had little to no salary cap space. There is a chance that James, Wade and Bosh could all take less than the max, which would allow the team to pursue one or two other players at more than the minimum. Mike Miller would be a great fit if that were the case.

It's going to be an extremely interesting season in Miami in 2010-11, as the expectations are sure to run high for this trio. But before this threesome can pursue a title together, management needs to put the proper pieces around them to allow the Heat to succeed as a team. It won't be an easy task thanks to the financial demands of these three stars, but Pay Riley is a guy who can get the job done.
