Microbiology As A Green Technology For Clean-up Of Bp Gulf Spill Coastal Areas
While current media complains that nothing new is happening in the clean-up efforts
of the BP Gulf Spill, Rick Allen of BioLynceus Biological Solutions, proposes that his green technology solutions are viable programs to remediate the oil slick in-land in areas like beaches, wetlands and coastal areas.
Rick explains that his technology combines nutrients and oil-degrading microorganisms. The combination of nutrients and microbiology hasten the degradation of the oils, giving the environment a break from the hydro-carbon contamination. Microbes provide a useful way of helping the environment recover from the impact of the oil, which continues to be a proven solution for mitigating oil, hydro-carbons and similar materials found in the oil spill. This technology has been used by Mr. Allen since the early 1990s when his company was working on remediation of soil from under-ground leaking tanks. Since then his company has successfully worked with hydro-carbon remediation in fresh water, municipal waste water, industrial and refinery wastewater streams, in addition to cleaning-up up soils that have been contaminated.
With traditional methods of measurement, the reduction of contamination can be measured, which helps determine the ecological recovery in an area that has been contaminated. Applying scientific methods with the introduction of the green technology allows the client the ability to see how much contamination is changing and give us an idea of how long the green technology will need to be utilized to get the action levels down to non-detect.
Rick states that one of his key concerns is how much material will continue to invade our coastal areas, since the spill will continue to impact the areas of the Gulf Coast for quite awhile and the oil will continue to be dispersed in-land. Rick states, the difficulty I see is the oil spill is not contained and so keeping measurements of the contamination, while doing treatments will be instrumental to assuring we are removing all of the oil. While the impact of the BP oil in our Gulf Coastal areas is of great concern, solutions that degrade and mitigate the oil, without causing further damage, are readily available in the market and need to be utilized to reduce the impact of the contamination in our coastal areas.
