I recently bought this lens, the mighty AF Nikkor 50mm 1.8D. I like this lens because it creates a feeling in me that my captures are created by me. I mean, like a painting that you handmade it. I own a Nikon D3000 and this lens will not auto focus in this type of camera body because the lens has no motor with it. I intentionally bought it because first the lens is very affordable but still it produces great images. Second, I like to capture scenery, portrait and floral pictures. In other words, I like to take pictures of still object or minimally moving object that's why I prefer to buy this lens. At first, I have some disappointments with this lens because you will be the one to move from your subjects compared to the zoom lenses but what happened in the next few weeks is that, I learned how to adjust my self and the setting of my camera to get the photo right. I kept on practicing until I got its secret on how to handle this lens. Since then, I had never encountered problems in capturing moments with this lens.

Here are some tips to get you started with this lens:

1. If you are shooting more than one person or landscape, try to close its aperture to f/4.0 or higher because if you open it wide like f/1.8, the person an inch away from the focus point will be blurred.

2. If you are shooting with a slow shutter speed, try to make or support your camera well to prevent blur caused by camera shake. This lens has no VR although this is a short lens, make a good stance that can make your shot stable.

3. Do not use it in events. This lens is a manual focus on new camera model like D3000 and it is hard to capture moments specially events with many people and moving subjects. If you can use it efficiently then use it but I advice not to.

4. Try to use this lens for 1 week. This will allow you to learn and know its strengths and limitations.

5. Get as many shots as you can. This will help you analyze and know where you miss.
