Mining accommodation needs provide housing options in the rest of Africa

. For many years, mining companies have used modular housing to provide accommodations in the remote mining areas for their workers. With the use of bunk beds, many bedrooms can house four or six workers comfortably. In a multiple bedroom unit, a dozen or more miners live together when not working in the mines. This provides an economical alternative to providing permanent housing and infrastructure in remote areas.

The same technologies and ideas used to handle mining accommodation needs can help solve Africa's severe housing shortage. The mining units must be mostly self-contained. Due to their remote locations, they cannot have hook-ups to power grids or to large water infrastructures. They use alternatives that make them liveable off the grid. For heating, refrigeration, and cooking, they use LP gas. For the lights, they use solar panels. For water, they collect rain off the roof into water tanks. The only real need is to deal with the sanitation waste. Moreover, there are many proven techniques to handle those needs without requiring a modern sewage system.

The self-contained nature of these mining accommodation options provide just what many areas of Africa need. Many of the surrounding areas around cities on the continent do not have the infrastructure required for modern housing. Modern homes need electric grids, water supplies, and sewage systems. However, most of these cities do not have the money or resources to supply those into areas surrounding their borders. Using these self-contained units provide an alternative that is both affordable and doable. Due to the nature of these units, it is possible to meet much of the demand as well.

These units come off assembly lines ready to go to the field. Once loaded on the back of a truck, these mining accommodation options are off to the job site. All they really need is a level plot and a way to handle the sanitation. Once set and hooked into the sanitation option, the house is ready for occupation. These homes are usually long and rectangular. This makes it possible to put several units in a single area. While it does provide close housing, it also gives people the ability to have privacy and a safe place of their own.
