In the Sixties it all started to happen in the fashion business

. For the first time we began to see girls who are today called supermodels its just we didnt know that at the time.

One or two super-slim very pretty and usually flat chested models appeared out of nowhere to replace the dowdy matronly models of yesteryear.

Yes, it was the swinging sixties and in London the Kings Road and Sloane Square were revealing amazing shop fronts with outrageous clothing for boys and girls.

This was also around the time when the old Establishment really did crumble quite dramatically with the discovery of illicit affairs involving top class hookers and stiff old conservative politicians as well as the odd Russian spy or two and a celebrity suicide.

Throw in a picture of a certain female member of a very aristocratic family committing something we cant talk about in front of the children, on an equally famous actor and then stir in the outrageous new pop groups and the Establishment really did collapse.

And then the mini-skirt arrived and middle aged men began walking into lamp posts.

The arrival of the mini skirt was shocking for the old and fun for the rest. It also meant that anything worked with a girl and a halfway decent figure in the shoe and boot department. With the mini-skirt it was possible to wear anything from high heels to knee high boots and even mid- thigh length boots ending just below the hemline.

Fashion is a very subjective matter and although designers try telling the gullible which way the next season will take us most people by the time they are in their late twenties or thirties usually know what they feel good and comfortable in to suit different circumstances.

Most people go to work in fairly plain clothing because they first of all do not want to wear their favourite stuff to work and secondly it does not reflect well trying to bring too much attention to oneself in the workplace.

The sixties revolution if it achieved anything opened the door to far greater individual choice. Soon after that mini period the Maxi arrived. From liberated min-skirts we were sent back to the nineteen thirties in one sudden season of madness!

Yet these dramatic swings from long to short and back again simply meant one thing and that is we are freer to choose whatever we want to wear and if that means skirts for some and trousers for others then what does it matter.

It also means a girl can wear high heels, sandals or knee high boots with the same pair of jeans or the same short skirt.

Winter is on the way and maybe it is time to check out the wardrobe and decide whether those old boots can last another month of slush and snow. Perhaps now is the time to spend a leisurely hour or two in front of the computer screen at home with your feet up to check the latest fashions and deals.
