It's something that will most probably happen to us at least once in our life, and there is nothing worse than the sinking feeling you get when you realise you have just pumped your car full of the wrong fuel. Not only will you have to pay that expensive mistake, but you'll also have to wait a couple of hours for your recovery company to turn up, drain it and potentially fix any damage you may have done.
Research published by Defacqto states that as many as twenty three percent of Car Insurance policies don't cover mis fuelling, which the AA reveal is done by over one hundred thousand road users per year.
The research also revealed that fourteen percent of car insurance policies don't cover for if you run out of fuel, which can easily happen if you are driving on roads that you don't know and fail to find a petrol station.
Mike Powell, the Insight Analysist at Defacqto said that drivers who put the wrong fuel into their vehicles "not only face a huge repair bill but may also find that their breakdown policy doesn't provide cover for their vehicle to be towed to a garage". He added that even the breakdown policies that do provide cover will only tow the vehicle to a garage or its destination."
The best advice is to check you have enough fuel before you start a long journey, and to be really careful to be aware in the petrol station, that you are filling up with the right type of petrol.
