Mixed Martial Arts Takedown Techniques
For your wrestling to be successful in MMA it's important to have the ability to
shoot in from both orthodox (left leg forward) and southpaw (right leg forward) stances. How you shoot in depends on your opponent's stance and striking. You have to defend yourself accordingly while attacking the legs or upper body to get the take down in MMA.
These wrestling for mma take down drills will require you to take penetration steps with BOTH legs from either stance-that means practicing four separate ways. You will be executing these wrestling for mma penetration steps ONLY after first blocking/ducking a strike.
* Left leg penetration step from orthodox against an orthodox strikes * Right leg penetration step from orthodox against a southpaw's strikes * Left leg penetration step from southpaw against an orthodox strikes * Right leg penetration step from southpaw against a southpaw's strikes
Practice each one of these wrestling for MMA techniques solo at first, then with a partner and then with a partner in a given stance, throwing a strike, which you will be shooting on after blocking or dodging. The following are the wrestling for mma training techniques one should practice when you get to the stage of adding strikes. Make sure to use protective gear when practicing take downs for MMA.
MMA take down from an orthodox stance against an orthodox stance:
* Against a right-limbed attack practice using a full shield (forearm and lower leg brought together) by either raising your left lower leg or by lowering your level and execute a penetration step with your left leg forward. Obviously you lower your level on a punch and shield on a kick. * Against a left-limbed attack practice pinning your right arm against your body or lowering your level and execute a penetration step with your left leg forward. Obviously you lower your level on a punch and shield on a kick.
MMA take down from an orthodox stance against a southpaw stance:
* Against a left-limbed attack practice using a full shield (forearm and lower leg brought together) by either raising your right lower leg or by lowering your level and execute a penetration step with your right leg forward. Obviously you lower your level on a punch and shield on a kick. What may not be so obvious is the fact that since you are forced to block with your right leg (your rear leg) you need to think of and execute that right shin block more as a strike with your shin to his shin (or his inner knee/thigh ideally) in order to be able to be in a position to smoothly transition to this wrestling for mma take down. * Against a right-limbed attack practice pinning your left arm against your body or lowering your level and execute a penetration step with your right leg forward. Obviously you lower your level on a punch and shield on a kick.
