Mobile Laboratory and Imaging Service
Urgent Med Housecalls, based in San Francisco
, California, is an innovative mobile medical service that strives to provide convenient, affordable and highly personalized care that is brought to patients at home, in hotel room, workplace or elsewhere. Services are usually available same day, often within 1-2 hours. Additionally, what makes these doctor house call services unique is the availability of easily carried radiologic and laboratory technology.
Essentially, x-rays, ultrasounds, EKG's, instant blood tests, strep tests, urine and pregnancy tests and more may now be conveniently brought to patients. The technology is state of the art, and only portable equipment and tests approved for use by the United States Food and Drug Administration are utilized. Throughout the San Francisco Bay Area all of these services are usually available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In outlying areas, certain portable tests may have more limited availability. However, house call practitioners can always refer patients to nearby laboratories and radiology centers for testing.
Referral to hospital lab and radiology facilities is also possible. Perhaps the most impressive technology now available includes the I-Stat, a handheld blood testing device that makes it possible to instantly test for glucose, electrolytes such as potassium, kidney function, INR, hemoglobin and more. Test analysis takes ~2 minutes, and only a few drops of blood are needed. Small handheld and laptop sized ultrasound machines are also available. These devices allow imaging of superficial and deeper structures in many parts of the body.
Resulting images appear on a screen and may be used immediately for the evaluation. X-ray machines are larger and heavier, but are easily wheeled into the home or elsewhere. In many cases they may be brought up stairs. X-ray images are developed digitally within minutes, usually in a van parked outside the patient's home or hotel room. Images are transmitted wirelessly to be reviewed by board certified radiologists.
The house call physician or provider may also review films with the patient on site, usually via laptop or on the screen of a smart phone. Mobile ultrasound technology has evolved so that an ultrasound machine, the size of a small portable computer, may be easily hand-carried anywhere, directly to the patient. Images are obtained, digitally transmitted, and quickly interpreted by a board certified radiologist, who communicates the findings with the house call medical provider.
The house call provider then utilizes this information to further strategy patient's medical care and treatment. Because of this technology, it is now possible for a patient with a deep venous thrombosis of the leg to receive complete evaluation and treatment without ever having to leave the home or hotel room. Medical care has never been more convenient than this!
