Modern Day Piece Of History
Sash windows have been one of the most valued parts of conservation area homes and traditional rural buildings since the 18th century
. Now that they have been developed to withstand adverse weather, can have parts replaced easily and are still one of the most attractive window options on the market, modern and newly developed homes are installing these traditional improvements.
They began life as somewhat compromised in durability and security and as the 18th century progressed so did the quality of the frames. The glazing bars became thinner and the panes of glass became larger, the more expensive windows had bars made from iron or brass. By the 1750s the sash pulleys were set into iron frames with solid brass face- plates, the grooves however were still not painted too ensure they did not stick. The frames were made from soft woods with oak sills from the mid-18th century up until the Second World War.
The development of sash windows was timely as it had become a superior preferred looking alternative to the older casement windows. The wrought iron hinged metal casement was dark and draughty but also restricted the use of larger sheer of glass which in turn exposed the weakness of the lead, this has recently been advanced and the frames have been replicated in modern day UPVC.
The functionality of 18th Century sash windows was also open to debate. The handles were flimsy and once the frames required painting this often compromised the ability to open the handles and the window effectively. Modern manufacturers have developed a much more attractive and functional selection of espag window handles which not only add to the character of sash window replicas but act as perfect UPVC window handles.
Espag window handles are installed into the upvc window frame and use a metal spindle to drive the windows mechanism. They are much more secure than previous options and have been developed to keep the sash windows locked when required and easy to open when fresh air is needed.
The popularity of sash windows has not declined and they are now a more suitable and durable replica of the very popular 18th century originals. Companies have developed the functionality of the window furniture to give fans of the sash windows the chance to personalise and replace existing windows parts to keep functionality and appearance at its very best.
Manufacturers developing such window accessories have improved the effectiveness and range of sash weights, the appearance of sash balances as well as designed and created sash window handles which have security, use and appearance down to a fine detail.
