More Than a Teacher and a Doctor
More Than a Teacher and a Doctor
More Than a Teacher and a Doctor
An exemplary lady physician recalls how she achieved her status through a roundabout route and a tribute to her adamant purpose in life, but she also shares some of her quirks. But she was never a single minded girl especially way back when she was in high school. Being a young girl from a local high school, she was torn between to career paths to be a linguist or to be a physician. So she decided to conquer it all French, Spanish, English and all the sciences as well! Even as she had excellent communication prowess, she still looked on to her Spanish teacher in making her final decision. This is what her teacher told her while you can be a doctor who is also a language expert, you cannot simply be a physician on the side.
She was greeted by nothing but science subjects as her A-level studies when she went to the local community college. She found the results to be discouraging after two years but this did not stop her. She only passed in her favorite area which was Chemistry.
She managed to join the University through the Natural Sciences door but she aimed to shift to medicine right way after completing her first year. She had a marvelous time but she did not perform so well so she won't be able to transfer that easily. She got more B's than A's. With this reason along with her growing love for chemistry, she became resolute on finishing the degree.
Her love for Chemistry allowed her to major in chemistry and food technology. She was in this field when she received her honors degree. There was not a single job out there for her right after she graduated. Her first year out of university, she was unemployed. Jobs seemed like they didn't exist. She went to the food industry to find one. Discouragement enables her to ask why she got into this in the first place.
The sole person that could offer her a job was a man who dealt with drugs and decided to offer her huge pay after he saw how proficient she was in handling industrial kettles. She could not accept the job and was not tempted though he did offer her a lot of money so before she turned it down she also clarified the fact that she was brought up that money is not everything to her. She continued to apply to medical school, refusing also to give up the dream of practicing medicine. She accepted a teaching job while she was fearful and hopeless from not hearing anything from medical school.
She needed money if she gets accepted in medical school so she decided to stop teaching and worked in the bank as trainee manager a year later. She recalled she looked at the pros and cons and spoke to people who she knew and the consensus was that in the end she would still be an employee if she stayed with the bank. As she works on what she loves, she can also have her own business and this is what medicine alone can give.
She was accepted to medical school two years later. The first year, in the usual tradition, was a mixture of fun and learning. She simply plunged into it. Studying enough, she didn't have to be a bookworm or to miss out on parties. She bagged honors in community health and was among the top 10 percent in Physiology in her first year. She connected with many people with community medicine and so she admired this so much. As you enter into the homes, you get the picture on your patients' lives. It was an exceptional program.
She boasted that when the time comes that she'd be cutting corpses, she will only find it disgusting but never emotionally disturbing. A new story comes in when we consider Pathology. Ten weeks were spent crying when she had to do autopsies on the recently dead. With their demise she felt an emotional loss. Thanks to the background in chemistry she has, she has great love for pharmacology. Chemicals working in the body especially to rid it of disease was something she found so mesmerizing. Even when she didn't usually go to the library then, now she visits there for some journals. Following her award in Pharmacology was the shock of everyone.
She no longer held on to being a bookworm for she focused more in organizing parties with her five other study buddies. Doing excellently in the final exams, three of them even got honors. One of her group members received a medal in gynecology and honours in others things. Now we can truly say that we didn't waste our time then.
