Moringa Leaf Powder the Weapon Against Malnutrition
Malnutrition is a widespread problem in many African countries
. They being incessantly hit by draught, famine and economic woes have failed to provide proper nutrition to their children. Many Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are coming forward to help create awareness among the growing populace about the need for good nutrition. While the middle and upper classes are having better access to medicines and nutritional food, the lower class residing in villages are still struggling to make ends meet.
Moringa Leaf Powder helps fight malnutrition :-
The hard work done by several NGOs has yielded good results and they have been able to explore the untapped resources of Moringa tree which can be best grown in dry tropical regions where malnutrition problem is the most. An analytical study by Zambia Agricultural Research Institute and several food research Associations have confirmed that the Powder contains :-
38.2% carbohydrate , 2.3% fat, 205% calories and 8.5% moisture and Amino Acids like Arginine (1325m mg), histidine (613 mg), isoleunine (825 mg), leucine (1950 mg), lysine (1325 mg) ,methionine (325mg) phenylalanine( 1388 mg) ,tryptohan( 425 mg) and valine (1063 mg) per 100g of dried leaf sample.
A case study done by Alternate Action for African Development has yielded stunning results revealing that the consumption of this powder by pregnant /lactating women actually helped them in better production of milk as well as children too increased their weight and overall health.
The business aspect :-
Countries like Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal and Zambia are making a breakthrough in this field by opening up herbal medicine shops and taking steps for better plantation of Moringa trees. There are small women groups who take it upon themselves to produce the leaf powder and then sell in bulk to local hospitals. These health structures sell the powder in 100 g sachets. Mono cropping is done by small farmers in Togo which includes planting the tree followed by stripping and drying leaves which are then crushed into powder. Since they dont need to bear overhead expenses apart from labor costs, the farmers can easily make good profit.
However to make this business profitable the small scale farmers and women groups need to follow quality production standards and need to register with health and nutrition authorities .Then they will be able to promote their products in a better and professional way with Government and NGOs support .
