A lot of hype has been given about being tall and growing even taller

. There are a lot of professions now where height is an advantage. Short (pun not intended) of going through extremes measures, like surgery or mechanical stretching (ouch!) here are some simple yet effective exercise that you can do in the confines of your bedroom.

Hanging - As you spend a greater part of the day standing up and sitting down, gravity compresses your spine and joints making you shorter. Observe how you increase by at least a millimeter after a good night's sleep. By doing simple hanging exercise, you can let the weight of your lower torso stretch your spine and in the process reduce the tension between your vertebrae.

Hold on to a horizontal bar that is high enough for your body to extend. Grab the bar with palms away from you and "hang loose" for about 20 seconds. Do this at least three times.

Dry Land Swim - Lay on your tummy with your body fully extended. Lift your head slightly then place both your arms straight in front of you, palms down with your right arm raised about 6 inches from the floor. Raise your left leg as opposed to your raised right arm. Hold that position for 20 seconds then change - left arm raise and right leg raised. Do this at least 6 times each.


The Bridge - Lay down with your feet flat on the ground, knees bent making sure your feet are as close to your butt as possible. Grab your ankles then lift your hips evenly until you arch your spine. Make sure you tuck your tummy and remember to breathe in and out. Hold the position for 5-10 seconds, then go back to starting position then repeat.

The Yawn - Stand up with your hands held together behind your neck. Bend your head backwards, as far back as you comfortably can. Hold from 5 -15 seconds. Repeat at least 6 times. These stretching exercises can help lengthen your muscles.
