Most Expensive Mattress

For people like Angelina Jolie (whose wealth is inversely related to her talent) there exists the world's most expensive mattress: Vividus.

The Vividus claims:

- The side stitching of the mattress increases stability

- The horsehair in the Vividus is hand flailed, meaning that the bed maintains its comfort and shape for a long time

- The mattress is constructed one layer of horsehair, cotton and wool at a time

Price tag: $59,750

So what makes this mattress so magical?

Before we start on the mattress, let's take a look at the frame.

It is made of slow growing pine from northern Sweden, its joints handcrafted using the "dovetail" technique of friction fitting each piece together - no nails or screws are used. The legs are made of polished oak, and the entire frame is reinforced with wood dowels. It takes about a week for one craftsman to make the frame of a Vividus bed.

"Yes, but does it fly?"

We wish. The bed is then fitted with a hand tied spring system tied together with yarn. Flax is used between each spring and the bed frame to prevent rubbing and noise. Everything is neatly secured together by "the highest quality" (expensive) quilted cotton fabric.

Now for the actual mattress.

Using horsehair, cotton and wool, the mattress is constructed layer by layer.

- Each horsehair is separated to preserve length, then teased together

- The cotton fabric is double reinforced and secured in tufts within the mattress

- Meanwhile, everything is stitched by hand

- The top layer of the mattress is a combination of layers of horsehair, wool and cotton all enveloped by Vividus' signature checkered ticking fabric

That's it. Your new yacht, er, mattress, is complete. The final touch? A personalized brass engraving with your name on it placed in a clearly visible spot on the foot of the bed.
