Movers - Choosing The Best Company

Chances are good that you have a wide selection of movers to choose from in your area

. What separates one company from another? Obviously, you want a company that is going to be there on time, treat your belongings with respect and care, get all of your stuff relocated, and not charge you an arm and a leg in the process. It would be nice if you could enter all of these traits into a computer and have a reliable name thrown back at you, but it isn't quite that easy. Here are some of the tips you can use to choose the best company for your big move.

Personal Recommendations

If you want to go about things the easy way, you should talk to everyone you know. It is almost a certainty that at least a few of your friends have hired local movers at some point in the past. Nothing speaks as highly of a company as a personal recommendation, so ask as many people as you can. You might even want to get on Facebook and put the question to all of your friends on there, even if you may not know everyone in your list as well as you might wish. This kind of approach can also let you gauge a consensus reaction, something that isn't as easy to do when you just ask a few friends separately.

Background Research

Whether you've been able to cobble together a list of recommendations or not, you can start calling companies to get some background information. Don't worry about price quoting right now, as few movers will be able to give you a quote that realistically matches their services without some very detailed information. Some companies may even need to inspect the premises before they can give you a good idea of what the service will cost. Stick to the facts. Ask about how long they've been doing business in the area, what insurance options they offer, and get their DOT number. From there, you can begin researching these companies through the Better Business Bureau to make sure they don't have a long list of customer complaints against them.

Estimates

For the best results, you should ask the movers who have made the cut thus far to come out and do on-site estimates of the service. Unless a company simply does all of their work for a basic flat rate, you shouldn't accept an estimate over the phone. This is bound to be incorrect and thus useless when you try to use it as a point of comparison. If a company won't come out to do a free estimate, it's no trouble to move on to the next company on your list.
