Moving Electronics Sensitive Equipment Needs Special Care

If youve decided that you are going to do some of all your packing to save money on your move

, you will probably need some packing tips for certain items. When youre moving electronics you must take into account that these sensitive pieces of equipment require careful packing to reduce the risk of damage during relocation.

Items like:

Computers;

TVs;

Stereos;

Game systems;

Satellite dishes;

Home wifi systems, and

Home theatre systems demand extra care and attention when packing.

If youre not particularly tech savvy you should consider hiring a professional technician to disconnect (and reconnect) your systems. A reliable mover will be able to recommend a reputable service provider should you need one.

How to pack your electronics

Read the manufacturers or users guide for specific moving instructions. If you cant find either of these, check the manufacturer's website for an online version or to request a copy.

When you pack a printer or anything with a toner or ink cartridge, remove it and store it in a sealable bag to prevent a messy spill. Pack the bag with the piece of equipment that it was removed from.

Remove all DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes or other media from your equipment and pack these items separately.

Before you disconnect anything, its smart to mark the wire or cable and the port you're removing it from with colour-coded labels so you can easily reconnect them later.

Write out step-by-step instructions detailing exactly how you've dismantled the electronic equipment so that you can refer to it later during reassembly. Tuck this instruction guide into the box along with the equipment.

When packing electronics, the best containers to use are the original boxes that the components came in, if you still have them. These will provide the best fit and have a place to stow any cables and connecters that belong with the piece, which can prevent confusion when youre unpacking everything.

If you dont have the original boxes you should wrap the electronics carefully in a non-conducting material and put in a sturdy box thats just a bit bigger than the piece of equipment. Place all labelled cables and associated pieces in the box too, or use a dedicated cable and parts box (as long as everything within it is securely labelled).

Fasten the box with packing tape, label it Fragile and indicate which way is up. If youre not using an original box, label it with the contents as well as which room it needs to be placed in.

These basic packing tips for moving electronics will help you organize and pack your sensitive equipment securely. If youd rather not perform this part of your move, ask a reliable moving company to do it for you!
