Moving House with Ease – Tips From a Home-Moving Junkie
Let's be honest
Let's be honest. Moving house is never easy. Moving house is not much fun. Moving house can be very stressful. I have moved house six times in four years and I would like to share my experiences to anyone facing this task.
As I have already stated, it's not easy, it's not fun and it's stressful. Once you accept these facts then the whole activity can be more manageable. Hands down, best thing in the world - pay someone else to do it. If you can afford it, get a firm in who will do all the packing, dismantling, moving and reassembly on your behalf. This eliminates all the stress and when things get broken, and things will get broken, you can blame someone else. But if you are like me and cannot afford a firm to do the job on your behalf then you are going to have to do it yourself.
First thing you are going to need is boxes. Lots of boxes. Start collecting these earlier. All shapes and sizes. You are also going to need plenty of tape and packing materials such as newspaper. My biggest tip to you is to buy several rolls of tape and lots of big chunky marker pens. As you pack boxes make sure you write on the outside a good description of the contents. It is not sufficient just to say clothes. Write on the box, Dads Smart Clothes', Kids winter jumpers'. The more descriptive the better. The last box you pack should be your tools. Your screwdrivers and hammer and anything else you need to reassemble your furniture. This box needs to be very clearly marked and stand out from the rest as it will be the first box you will be looking for when you arrive at your new destination. Make sure it is the last box you put in your van and the first box you take out.
If you use bin liners to transport items, then do not leave these bags anyone near a bin. That is just asking for trouble. Someone will come along and throw them out thinking they are doing you a favor. Also don't leave these bags, especially if they contain clothes, in the kitchen next to the kettle. Otherwise your designated Tea Maker' may throw all the tea bags in with your white shirts thinking it is rubbish. This actually happened to me and I ended up having to throw the shirts away. I wish you the best of luck with the experience.
