Moving Your Aging Relative To A Care Home

Moving a loved one into a care facility whether it is a nursing home

, group home or assisted living facility can be as easy or difficult as you choose to make it. Of course, everyone knows that there are difficult moments. If it is totally necessary to make this move, then it is important to first let go of any guilt surrounding the event. It may take a few days or a few weeks, but as you begin to inquire about the various facilities, get information and talk to people those activities will help. Some people never allow guilt to lessen, but these are people who do not want to resolve difficult feelings. If you are a person who frequently torments yourself, this is the time to let go of that tendency for everyone's welfare.

Finding a care facility should be a process and not a one day event. Occasionally, a situation will be abruptly thrust onto us and a quick decision will need to be made. If this occurs and your loved one ends up in the wrong situation, you can always find another facility and move your family member later. Nothing is ever 'written in stone.' If you feel your loved one is in an inappropriate or abusive situation, be vigilant and talk with facility administrators, doctors and nurses.

It is a good idea to thoroughly check-out facilities before your loved one needs to leave home. You realise that eventually there is that possibility, so it very much pays to look ahead and begin the process earlier, rather than later. Talk with other caring family members if possible. If you have no other family, then call on a devoted friend.

Begin preparing your loved one for the care home as soon as you are able to do so. Involve them in the process as much as possible. This may be on your mind most of the time, but spare the person most of your thinking; do not talk about it constantly. This definitely will make that person feel unwanted. Ask those at the facilities for pointers concerning the move. They will likely have some suggestions.

After all of the preliminary preparation is complete, allow your loved one to decide what he wants to take with him. Do not be critical of choices, but at the same time remind him that space is limited.

Make certain that at least one family member or close friend goes with you on that first day. Stay at the care home as long as you are needed. When it is time to go, let her know just how much you love her and that you will visit every week. Make certain she has a phone so that you are able to keep in touch when necessary, or just to talk.

Some say not to visit for a while until he or she has made the adjustment to the move. If you feel that you should visit in the beginning, it will help both of you to feel good about the move and you will know if everyone at the care home is doing the right things for your loved one.

Just remember that things do get easier as time passes, as long as you are spending quality time with the person. After looking at the room, pick up a special gift that will 'fit' into the scheme of everything. Make every visit a special and joyous occasion and all will go well for everyone.
