While it is true that most people who first enter multi-level network marketing fail, it is also true that those who attain success, generate more income and wealth for themselves than those working in any other industry. You don't need an MBA to be a multilevel marketer, you don't need to speak six languages or live in a big city. Multi level marketing is actually the most even business playing field operating today.
Multi-level marketing has had many names since its inception. It has been called referral marketing, referral sales, direct sales, affiliate marketing, home-based franchising and network marketing. It is a business model where the salespeople of a company are paid not only for sales of products and services, but also for the sales of people who they recruit into the business. These recruits, and the people they, in turn, recruit are called a downline (or network). This downline creates a hierarchy of compensation, hence the "multilevel" part of the marketing.
An individual represents a company that produces products or provides a service. These individuals are usually referred to as distributors, though they go by many names depending upon the multilevel marketing company for whom they work. They are not paid a salary, but instead, work solely on commission. Distributors have several ways to make a living. First, they earn a commission on the sale of products. Next, they earn a living based on the profit of the sales they make. Most multi level network marketing companies don't have a set price schedule for their products (services are a bit different and can be more standardized). Individual distributors can set their own prices and thus determine their own profit margin. Finally, they can earn a living through commission on sales of the distributors they recruit. Most companies also offer volume bonuses and referral bonuses for recruiting a certain number of qualified distributors.
People often confuse the multi level network marketing business model with a pyramid scheme. The key difference between a legitimate, legal multi level marketing business and a pyramid scheme is that the purpose of a pyramid scheme is to suck money out of a mark and move on. The purpose of a multi level marketing company is to sell product.
When considering joining a multi level marketing operation, pay attention to the focus of the person who is recruiting you. If they talk to you about the products or services they sell and how those products and services make a real difference to consumers, then you probably have a legitimate business. If all they are concerned about is wiping out your savings account and you never so much as see a bottle or a tube of whatever you'll be selling, you might want to move on. Scammers have made multi level marketing a treacherous area for novices, so if you are new to the business, be sure to do your homework before you sign on.
