Mumbai To Mahabaleshwar - Know The Path

Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra is a group of islands in the Arabian Sea that are connected by bridges to the mainland

. The seven islands are Bombay Island, Parel, Mazagaon, Mahim, Colaba, Worli and Old Woman's Island. Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is one of the largest harbour cities situated on the western coast of India.

The hill station of Mahabaleshwar, over 270 km from Mumbai, was the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency during the Raj. Its heights and the friendly weather have since made it a popular holiday destination. Mahabaleshwar is surrounded by several popular hill stations and crumbling yet imposing forts, and is home to vast strawberry and raspberry farms. The starting point of five rivers, Mahabaleshwar retains many marks of colonialism from the British days.

Mumbai and Mahabaleshwar are well connected by road. To reach Mahabaleshwar, there are two routes you can take. The first is Panvel-Pune-NH7-Wai-Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar and the second is Panvel-Alibag-NH17-Poladpur-Mahad-Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar. The first is about 40 km longer. The distance between Mumbai and Mahabaleshwar is 260 km if you travel by the Mumbai-Pune expressway and 220 km if you travel via the Mumbai-Goa road. Both the routes take around 4 hours to reach the destination.

State owned buses ply from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar on a regular basis. The rate of a seat is around Rs. 200. Private operators run air-conditioned video coaches and run air-conditioned Volvo buses daily at night from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar. The rate per person, one way, is for AC Coaches Rs.350 during season and Rs. 300 during off season. For AC Volvo buses a seat costs Rs.650 during season and Rs. 550 during off season. The total journey time these buses take, including two stops for refreshments, is 5 hours.

You could also hire a vehicle from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar. Taxis can also be hired from Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar and the fare is around Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000 for a round trip. If travelling in a group you could also book a bigger vehicle like a tempo traveller.

One could also take your own car. There are a few fuel stations and food stalls along the highway for the convenience of the traveller.

The nearest airport is in Pune, about 120 km away from Mahabaleshwar. Going to Pune first by air and then taking a bus or taxi to Mahabaleshwar is not convenient for travellers going from Mumbai.

The nearest railway station is Wather, 62 km from Mahabaleshwar. Travelling to Wather by train and taking the road is not a convenient option.

One can enjoy the tourist points like Wilson Point, Bombay Point, Elphinstone Point, Kate's Point, Pratapgarh Fort, Arthur's Seat and Rajpuri Caves. Mahabaleshwar is famous for its strawberries and mulberries.
