Munnar Attractions are many and Varied Through all of Kerala, India

There are so many varied Munnar attractions and scenery that you can see if you visit

the State of Kerala in southwest India and the tourist area of Munnar. The area is located in the Western Ghats which is one of the biodiversity spots of the world that is home to thousands of species of flowering plants, hundreds of species of birds and mammals and endangered species. It has lush jungles, high elevations, dense forest, gorges, and deep cut valleys. The area of Pothamadu which is about four miles from Munnar is one of the Munnar attractions where you can see tea, coffee and cardamom plantations which all of the associated good smells.

A bit further out but still in Kerala and the tourist area of Munnar are some heritage sites which include some palaces. One of these is the Hill Palace which is the largest archeological museum in Kerala. It was built in 1865 and has 49 buildings built in the traditional architectural style of the area and which sits on over 54 acres. Another of the Munnar attractions is the Mattancherry Palace which is a medieval palace built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555 AD. It is the home to some good mythological murals in India and which are in the best tradition of Hindu Temple Art.

With it 25 miles of Munnar tourist area is Marayoor with its Stone Age caves, temples and waterfalls. A stunning part of Kerala comprises 38 rivers and 5 lakes and is called the Kerala backwater area where they are plied with houseboats or what used to be riceboats or Kettuvallam which were used to carry goods from the interior villages of the Kerala backwater area to the towns of Cochin or Alleppy. Now there are roads and bridges but the houseboats are available for rent and come with a crew including a chef. This is a delightful way to see this portion of Southern India and drift along in a lazy way and watch the passing countryside.

If you visit the Eravikulam National Park which was established as a National Park in 1978 you will see many different creatures like tigers and leopards and endangered species also. It is open from 7am to 6 pm and has a camera and video camera charge plus an entrance fee.

The whole area is an area of beauty with the 360 miles of sandy beaches, the tea estates which you can visit, trekking trails, rugged mountains, waterfalls and rolling hills. It is a super summer destination with a moderate climate year round. It has elevations above 8000 feet plus dense forest and lots of trees like teak and red sandalwood.

There is bird watching which is best when the birds are migrating from November to June where you can see a serpent eagle or a fairy bluebird. The sanctuary is called the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary or also known as Thattekad. There are no vehicles allowed and it is suggested you hire a guide.
