1) Love Yourself. Until I reached 35ish, I had a very poor self image. I was critical of my looks, body, social skills, you name it I criticized it. The thing is I didn`t even realise I was doing it until a friend pointed out that I never had a nice word to say about myself.

It took time, but gradually I turned the negative feelings I had into positive ones. Don't get me wrong, it was hard work to change the habits of a life time, but well worth it. It was only when I had my self esteem issues sorted, that I was in the right frame of mind to lose the weight. You can`t possibly design a beautiful new shape for yourself while you loathe your body.

2) Look Forward. When you have tried as many times as I have to lose weight, it`s hard to put all the failed attempts behind you but that`s just what you have to do.

If you constantly remind yourself of all the times you`ve tried before, you will already have failed in your mind before you even start. And to lose the fat, you have to believe that you can otherwise there`s no point in even trying.

When I get a new group of clients, the first thing I ask them is "Who can say with absolute certainty that they`re going to lose their excess weight?" Usually, only around four or five percent of the class raise their hands, which is quite shocking really. The rest are basically saying, "Well I`ll give it a go, I`ll probably fail because I have before, but you never know"

If this sounds like you, then you need to give yourself a good shake, because with that attitude you ain`t losing anything. Forget trying to lose weight until you can honestly say to yourself, "This time the fat`s coming off. No matter what obstacles are put in front of me, nothing`s going to stop me getting the shape I want."

Everyone thinks losing weight is just about counting calories and creating a deficit, but until you get in the right frame of mind even that task will be impossible to stick to.

3) Surround yourself with "radiators" not "drains". You need to be with people who encourage and support you, not those n`er do well lot who pour doom and gloom on your efforts.

4) Eat more raw food. The cooking process destroys certain minerals and vitamins, eating raw foods such as vegetables, beans, nus and legumes will balance your blood sugar and make you feel fuller for longer.

5) Never give up. Be prepared for the tough times and allow yourself to "fail" in the process. Losing weight is not a test and it`s okay to cheat a little. Give yourself a break and get right back on track straight away without beating yourself up.
