NEW LIBERTY - American tyranny, economic crash and hope for a new micronation

The United States is headed for economic collapse. A number of factors, including a skyrocketing national debt, trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities, a declining dollar and the coming strain of baby boomers on Social Security and Medicare will soon combine to create an economic crisis which will most likely spell the end of freedom for a dying America.

On May 9, 2007, George W. Bush signed Presidential Directive NSPD-51, granting dictatorial powers to the President in the case of a "catastrophic emergency", loosely defined as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions." In other words, America is just an "incident" away from martial law.

In response to the danger Americans face, some have already left for other places in search of freedom. Some have gone to other countries living in what measure of liberty they can. Others have decided that no country protects freedom adequately, so they've started their own micronations. Perhaps the most well known example of this is the Principality of Sealand, a former sea fort occupied by former British Major Paddy Roy Bates, who settled there in the late sixties and proclaimed it his own state.

More recently, those in search of their own sovereign state have looked to other ways to start their own sovereign nations such as building floating artificial islands or giant cruise ships. The idea of seasteading, or the creation of permanent dwellings at sea, has gained popularity recently thanks to the creation of the Seasteading Institute in 2008 and a $500,000 investment in it by PayPal founder Peter Thiel. Another avenue that is being explored is the idea of moving a large group of like-minded people to an existing nation with a small population and replacing the existing government with a new one by prior super majority vote of its residents. An example of such an effort is the New Liberty Trust, formed in 2010.
