Navy Kit to be Warehoused

It appears that the Royal Navy will have to up its warehouse insurance premiums after being told that HMS Ark Royal will have to be almost immediately decommissioned as part of the Government's defence review.

Warehouse insurance premiums will likely rise for the Navy as they will have to mothball equipment and kit as their flagship goes into mothballs. And the ship's Harrier Jump jets will also get the boot, although whether they will be mothballed, scrapped, or sold, remains to be seen.

The upshot is that the country won't have the ability to launch jet fighters at sea for the first time until 2019.

The government decision which will no doubt have civil servants looking for the best warehouse insurance deals out there is mostly to pay for the building of two new carriers which the previous administration, it's claimed, had no funds to sign the contracts. And to add to the irony, it's highly likely that both carriers, once completed, will either have to be mothballed, or sold. And even if commissioned, they will not have the capability to land aircraft from other allied nations, such as the US and France.

The ignominious chopping of the Ark Royal first launched in 1985 and due to be retired in 2014 is part of a package of cuts that has seen major cuts in all arms of the military.

Liam Fox, the government's defence secretary, said that the plans for the navy's surface and submarine fleet would strike the "...correct balance for the next 30 to 40 years."

He also confirmed that the new carriers, if they were commissioned into service, didn't have to have vertical takeoff aircraft. They could use fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, or unmanned drones.

HMS Ark Royal was the pride of the navy and is some 200 metres long, with a maximum beam of nearly 40 metres. It has draft of 8.4 metres and displaces 20,000 tonnes. Nearly 700 sailors are required to sail her and it can carry an additional 668 aircrew and Royal Marines.

But mothballing equipment from a suddenly decommissioned warship is going to prove a logistical nightmare for the Royal Navy whose officials will be checking their warehouse insurance details.

Indeed, the same can be said of all three military services who even if kit and equipment is surplus to requirements and ends up being sold, or scrapped, it still has to be stored in warehouses. And the costs in logistics, warehouse space, administration and extra personnel will prove a large bill for the government, despite their best efforts to save money.

The situation has already caused some embarrassment for the nation, with Prime Minister David Cameron having to convince President Barak Obama that the UK can maintain its position as leading military power.
