The NCAA is a driving force in college football
. With legions of fans across North America, the association is home to some of the best collegiate teams and clubs. This includes Syracuse, UNLV, Lehigh, and countless other schools and universities. With its high impact action and divisional titles, NCAA football tickets are always in demand. Like the NFL, the association has its top teams and those that simply fall short each season.
Division 1 is regarded as the best of the best, which caters to schools with larger budgets and more high-end facilities. More athletic scholarships are also awarded within this division. Division II offers fewer scholarships, however, cannot be discounted for their talent. Division III is at the bottom of the totem pole, but they do have some strong teams as well. The latter offers no scholarships for athletes though. As NCAA football continues to soar in popularity, new playoff formats have brought both scrutiny and admiration from fans and media alike.
New Playoff Format:
As part of the 2012-2013 school year, new playoff formats have been implemented across the board. This has brought much debate between fans, media, and even teams within the NCAA football corridor. According to the recent announcement, there will now be a four-team playoff to determine each season's college football champion. This was initiated by the BCS committee, which pretty much ends the reign of the football bowl system. Most critics, however, already believe the bowl system has been devalued for years now.
While the new system was based on a myriad of factors, many believe its goal is to secure fairness for less than stellar teams. With the new format, nearly every college team will have an impartial chance to enter the fray. How they perform, however, will determine whether they advance into the higher brackets and semi-finals.
New Format Reasons:
The new playoff format has received some admiration as well. According to several college football team Presidents, the schedule is less strenuous than the bowl system. It is also cost-effective, since fans no longer have to spend countless dollars for just one bowl game. At the same time, those interested in college football do not have to miss essential class time. Even during holiday breaks, one has the option to either travel for games or simply watch them on ESPN with loved ones.
While these options seem minute, they did serve as the backdrop for the new format. Another deciding factor was to centralize conference champions under one banner. In the past, any football team that won its conference could call itself a national champion. They, however, were not regarded as an undisputed or unified college football champion. With the new format, there will only be one college football champion across the board.
Good or Bad?
While the verdict is still out, it seems most football fans are somewhat caught in the middle. They do like certain aspects of the new format, however, dislike other portions. According to recent polls, fans like the fact that an impartial committee will select teams based on certain criteria. They, however, do wish for more games like the pro leagues.
