Near Infrared Spectroscopy: Saving Lives And Shaping The Future Of Industries

The electromagnetic spectrum is used to analyze medical and pharmaceutical diagnostics along with agrochemical and food quality control

. It also examines combustion research as well. Basically, combination vibrations and molecular overtones are all part of this technology. Quantum mechanics are also related to this science.

Since NIR allows molar absorptivity, it can enter into a sample much more effectively compared to mid-infrared radiation. Beginning in the nineteenth century, Herschel discovered near-infrared energy. In the 1950s, industrial application started. However, NIRS was only used with different optical devices such as mid-infrared, visible and ultraviolet spectrometers as merely add on units.

As it developed throughout the years, it was used on simple chemical analysis. It became a significant tool for research in the field of science when the monochromator detector was developed along with light-fiber optics. Scientific fields such as medicine, physiology and physics have been applying the optical method. Recently, hospitals have been using NIRS technology on patients.

In terms of instrumentation, it has several similarities with mid infrared and visible ranges. The recording of intensity is possible due to the dispersive element which is the prime source. Transmission or reflection is the two possibilities of measurement for the spectrum. A specific application for NIRS is for hemoglobin concentration changes which are found in body tissues.

Near infrared spectroscopy have various applications such as astronomical spectroscopy, combustion products, pharmaceuticals and analysis of food products. In terms of remote monitoring, it has been developed to probe soils and plants. Using satellites, instruments collect data to monitor soil chemistry and ground cover. A breakthrough in NIRS has enabled it to be used on infants.

One thing about NIR spectroscopy is that it can only be used in scanning cortical tissue. It also has a three-dimensional application which is seen in optical tomography. It is so specific that it is able to produce quantitative data. Significantly, it can even be used on tumors, breasts and muscles. There is no doubt that near infrared spectroscopy has been a breakthrough in the scientific world. It is saving lives and helping industries become more efficient as well.
