Nebrodi Park - Sicily

Nebrodi Regional Park, established August 4, 1993, with its 86,000 ha is the largest protected natural area of Sicily. The Nebrodi, together with the Madonie Peloritani west and east, are the Sicilian Apennines. They overlook, to the north, the Tyrrhenian Sea, while its southern boundary is marked by, in particular from the Alcantara River and from the course of Simeto. Notable difference is the hike that a few tens of meters above sea level reaches the maximum altitude of 1847 meters of Monte Soro. Other findings are reported from the Mountain of the King (1754 meters), Fau Peak (1686 m) and Serra Pignataro (1661 meters). The main elements characterizing the natural landscape Nebrodi are the asymmetry of each slope, the different shaping of the mountains, the lush vegetation and wetlands. Essential peculiarity of the topography is gentle terrain, due to the presence of wide banks of clay rocks and sandstone: the peaks, Monte Soro reached with the maximum altitude of 1847 s. l. m., es'aprono have rounded slopes in wide valleys crossed by many rivers that flow into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

However, when the limestone prevail, the landscape takes on aspects of the Dolomites, with irregular outlines and rough and fissured forms. This is the case of Monte San Fratello, and especially the Rocche del Crasto (1315 m). The complex forest have a significant impact on the climate of the area nebrodense, which is characterized by having, unlike the coast and the rest of Sicily, long, harsh winters and warm dry summers. Temperatures in the hinterland, but it varies from one area to another, generally remain between 10 and 12 C in the middle and high mountains, while the rainfall is strongly related to altitude and above the exposure of slopes, ranging from a minimum of 600 mm to a maximum of 1400 mm. Phenomena such as snow and fog are very common and mean that you create just the right degree of humidity necessary for the existence of certain types of wood. The slow flow of rainwater into the valley, condensation and rainfall favor hidden, in fact, the permanence of beech, with its oval leaves equipped with hair, is able to retain the water of condensation being able to overcome the long periods drought. The vegetation of the park Nebrodi is characterized by different types of vegetation according to the band height above sea level and from other physical and environmental factors.
