Neil Young's Twisted Road Tour kicked off in Albany, N.Y. on May 14 and will see him stopping in 14 cities scattered across the U.S. through June 7. Lauded contemporary British folk artist Bert Jansch is on the road with Young, who has cited Jansch as a major influence. While performing his third concert on May 21 at the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts in Worchester, Mass., Young announced to the crowd, "I've got a new hat. But I'm not wearing it tonight. I'm very comfortable with the old one I've got." The show also included staples like "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)," "Tell Me Why" and "Helpless."
The new tracks performed by Neil Young on his current tour are reportedly meant for his next album, which Spinner reports is produced by Daniel Lanois, known for his work with Irish rock band U2, and will be titled Twisted Road. The album will be Young's first since his 2009 effort Fork in the Road and will be the first time he has entered the studio with Lanois. Rumor has it that Young decided to embrace change after the death of his music and film collaborator Larry "L.A." Johnson, who passed away in January.
Young's friend and former bandmate David Crosby chatted with Rolling Stone back in April and was the first to leak the news about Young's forthcoming new album. Crosby told Rolling Stone, "Neil told me last week that he was having a great time talking music with him [Lanois] and just relating to him. I said to him, 'If you want a harmony, I'm volunteering.' He said, 'You know, if I need one you'll be the first guy I call.'" No word yet on whether or not Young took Crosby up on his offer!
Crosby also spoke about the impact of L.A. Johnson's death on Young, saying, "I think that Neil's been a little lonely for someone to interact that way because his best buddy [L.A. Johnson] died and that just really left a hole there."
Although Young's tour didn't take off until mid-May, the "Ohio" rocker has been performing scattered gigs since his last full-fledged tour. Earlier this year, Young helped late-night host Conan O'Brien end his short-lived stint as host of NBC's Tonight Show with a bang. The surprise musical guest performed "Long May You Run" during the Jan. 22 episode, in which O'Brien mentioned that Young was the first perform to phone him to offer support over his battle with the network and fellow comedian Jay Leno.
