This process will vary from location to location and depend on local laws and practices
for your area and electric company, but more an more places are encouraging renewable energy production from the residential side. Some will let you wind it back, and credit the money to another month's bill. Other companies will let you wind it back all the way to a break-even point, where you wouldn't have a bill, but won't actually send you a check for the electricity you put back. Others in more progressive and energy crunched areas will let you create as much electricity as you want, and send you a check for how much it is worth. This saves them from having to produce a little more on their end that month. You will have to research the regulations for this in your own area, and see what your utility company's policies are.
