Networking Is So Easy, Even a Caveman Can Do It

If you live in the United States, you are probably familiar with those Geico commercials

in which they offend cavemen by suggesting how easy it is to save money using their insurance. As humorous as those ads are, there is an underlying point being made. They're basically suggesting that "anyone" can do something.

I can't help but to put networking into that same category and reiterate that "anyone" can take advantage of business networking. Some would argue that there are people that are just too shy to get engaged or that other people are too impatient to put the time in. Those may be some extreme examples but I still say that "anyone" can take advantage and even benefit from networking.

Why do I say this? It is because of what I know about perspectives. Simply changing the way we think about certain things can dramatically shift our direction and beliefs. As people, we are of a design in which an inspiration or epiphany can suddenly cause us to literally be reborn. Not physically of course, but reborn in perspective.

Stephen Covey refers to this as a "Shift in Paradigm" in his book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". I mention this because if an individual, based on their life experiences, has a negative or fearful prospective towards business networking, then a forced shift in paradigm can turn their business life around.

In other words, if every time they have tried to use networking to improve upon career goals and they met with failure, a belief was formed as a result. The actions that they took and the overall perspective could actually have been the cause of the failure.

If you are reading with an open mind and accept what is being suggested, it is easy to see that if the same person is somehow indoctrinated with a more positive perspective, he or she will proactively make networking work for them. This means that a person must literally "change their mind". However, this is best done under their own initiative.

"Anyone" or let's just say, just about "Anyone" can take the initiative to change their perspective if they desire. I'd like to say this is a very difficult task to achieve but it really isn't. The act of doing so is really quite easy. The difficult part might be the willingness of the person to take the first step. We make networking easy by choice.
