, neutrinos usually have small mass resulting from decay of other particles. Wolfgang Pauli was the initial developer of the concept in the year 1930. Working on energy conservation laws and radioactivity, Pauli aimed at maintaining law of energy conservation at the time of beta decay.

In course of radioactive nucleus emission of beta particle the electron contained in it might retain energy from zero to a specific level. If the electron carries less than maximum possible value, the balance energies are taken away by undetected particles. Such neutral elementary particle is called neutrinos.

Unique attribute of neutrinos is that its charge has to be zero. Charged particles can be detected pretty easily. Also charge neutrinos would be a violation of the law of energy conservation during beta decay.

Inventor of neutrino, Enrico Fermi opined that these particles are necessary element of conservation laws denoting momentum and spin. Neutrino just as the electron is one of the leptons. While it plays a role in the weak decay of the nuclear particles, it plays no such role in strong binding force of nuclei. Although the concept was discovered by Fermi, American physicist Frederic Reines and Clyde L Cowan detected it directly in 1956.


Similarly, the association of neutrino with muon was detected only in 1962. Yet another type of neutrino that was associated with tau particle was identified first in 1970s but was detected only in the year 2000.

Another occasion when the neutrinos are emitted is the time when a pion gets decayed and converts into muon. Such emission also takes place in case of decay of a host of other elementary particles. Since the neutrinos are considerably stable, they can only be absorbed through the same weak interactions that resulted in their creation. When neutrinos are energised, they can reverse the decay that caused its production.

Oscillation theory propagated by the scientists hold that neutrinos can change types while travelling through space. Such transformation requires that they cannot be mass less and should have a tiny amount of it. Prolonged research and experimentation revealed the reasons of failure hitherto experienced by scientists. It was found that they were trying to find one type of neutrino in another type.

That the neutrinos changed type while on the move, also conclusively established that they have mass making possible such fusion reaction.
