New Alternate Energy Source, The Waste Gasifier
A gasifyer is used to heat wood or other organic matter to a temperature great enough to release the volatile elements inside
. The gasses produced can be burnt in an engine to make power or just burned in a heating system. The gasifier is basically a container that is insulated to hold in the heat.
inside this container is a small bed of burning fuel. This has access to outside air, allowing a small percentage to burn, but under controlled conditions, and begin the gas production.
The whole operation can be self contained.
A modest controlled burn is required, partly because you do not want to simply set fire to all the combustion volume, and the small fire burning with limited oxygen is efficient. And warming and drying the balance of the fuel stock means it will also promptly burn when it , in turn, falls into the fire grate. Temperatures of the order of 1200 degrees F should be aimed for. The red-hot unburned gasses are allowed to escape from the top of the container. The gasses are then cooled and filtered, the cleanup is to cause less damage in an engine, and a denser gas has more power.
A special advantage is a gasifyer is it is self contained yet small enough to be transportable by pallet or trailer. A four cylinder engine needs an oil drum sized gas producer, but if the fuel is a waste product, the gas is just as good.
The types of fuel normally used will be waste wood chips, chipped branches, coconut waste, rice and corn husks and even battery chicken shed litter. Even rapid growing willow may be planted as a fuel harvest.
Could this be a novel source of fuel? Commercial agriculture needs to spend cash disposing of large amounts of waste to landfill. A further eco-friendly advantage is that the residue or char from the gasifier can be used as a soil conditioner, meaning still less waste.
A large industrial gasifier may have to be used in an area heating undertaking or in a large farm yard waste energy producer in order to acquire economies of scale.
But, I am more concerned with smaller gasifyers to subsidise house hold costs, or off grid livelihood.
home gasification has the added advantage of producing gasses, frequently called syngas, that are especially clean burning, producing little or no pollution.
The claim is that 20lbs of dry chipped wood is comparable to 1 gallon of petrol. A suitably sized gasifier could be made to provide all the gas for a particular engine, the larger the gasifier the bigger the engine. Gasifyers can be designed to want no external energy, though having a forced draught helps the device to start, and of course some one or some thing has to feed the fuel into the hopper. With an internal combustion engine the inductance will pull air through the hearth creating a self sustaining cycle.
As a green alternate energy source a gasifyer and petrol generator offers a serious solution.
