New Cleveland CG15 DSG Oil Quench wedge on golfwholesalestore.com reviews
The new Cleveland CG15 DSG Oil Quench wedge is the most technologically advanced wedge that Cleveland Golf has introduced to the wedge market in almost a decade. The CG15 wedge combines a laser milled face with Zip groove technology to provide golfers with the ultimate control and the highest spin level yet seen in a Cleveland Golf wedge.
The Laser Milled clubface uses the accuracy of a laser to mill four calibrated lines between each groove which conform exactly to the official rules on roughness limit. The new Laser Milled method perfected with the Cleveland CG15 DSG Oil Quench wedges provides a more precise and consistent surface roughness than any of the alternative methods on the markets. This enhanced roughness has allowed Cleveland to maximise the amount of spin achieved by each CG15 wedge.
The CG15's ZIP Grooves features a 25% larger groove volume than with conventional grooves and work to channel as much debris as possible out of the groove at impact. This improves contact and again helps to optimise the spin levels achieved. The ZIP Groove performance is achieved by Cleveland Golf's breakthrough new milling technique that allows the grooves to be bigger and to feature pristine edges. Cleveland's new manufacturing technique protects the grooves throughout the construction of the club meaning the grooves on the finished club are exactly the same as they were when they were originally milled. This means that the CG15 grooves are able to get much more spin than any previous Cleveland wedge. Golfers will notice that this means the CG15 is much more consistent and that difference between different lofts is much less pronounced than on other wedges.
The Cleveland CG15 Oil Quench wedge features an S Sole design that incorporates a wider sole near the heal of the club and a narrower sole at the toe to help improve performance from the sand without harming the CG15 versatility when tackling other shots.
The CG15 Oil Quench also features a traction wedge shaft that has a softer tip and is slightly stiffer further up the shaft to provide the feel and responsiveness that is so important for golfers when playing wedges without losing the full shot consistency that is also required. Although the rules on grooves are changing the Cleveland CG15 will be eligible for play by amateur until at least 2024 giving golfers the chance to enjoy the potential of maximum spin for years to come.
The CG15 DSG Oil Quench wedge features a Dynamic Sole Grind which allows square-faced shots to play like a standard bounce wedge. The leading portion of the sole is narrow with a high bounce angle, while the trailing edge sole grind provides low bounce performance on open-faced shots due to its lower leading edge. This combination of sole features allows players to hit high and soft touch shots with ease.
The Cleveland CG15 wedge has managed to combine the classic performance of the 588 wedge with the new technologies of groove design and sole grind. The biggest change and the one you notice first is the laser milled mini grooves between the real grooves. Apparently the rules allow for a certain level of roughness on the face so Cleveland have laser milled lines between the grooves up to these limits to increase the amount of spin at impact. These mini grooves combine with the Zip grooves that were in the previous CG12 and CG14 models to generate what Cleveland say is the maximum amount of spin possible.
In our tests this seemed to be borne out, but make sure you take the edge off the grooves with someone else's balls. The head also features an enhanced heel and toe grind to enable you to open the face more easily and this certainly does the job. With pitching and chipping shots, this club was a delight to hit. It felt perfectly balanced and the feel from the Cleveland Traction shaft and the face at impact was excellent and whichever loft you use you will be hard pushed to find a better club from the grass. From the sand, the 56 degree model seems to lack a little weight in the head for us, but that is a minor quibble as it still performs very well. The standard Cleveland CG15 wedge does not conform to the new Condition of Competition rules for wedges, but amateurs will be able to use this for years to come and we would recommend you get one in the bag.
Laser Milled Face
Using the precision accuracy of a laser, four perfectly calibrated texture lines are milled between each groove exactly to the conforming roughness limit. This breakthrough surface roughness application optimizes ball-to-face friction and maximizes spin under the rules of golf.
Zip Grooves
An envelope-stretching groove geometry that optimizes groove dimensions to conforming limits. The larger groove volume channels the most debris possible at impact to improve contact and maximize spin.
CG15 S Sole
A wider sole width near the heel and narrow sole width near the toe that improves bunker performance without sacrificing versatility.
