New Police Car Choices Saves Over 3m

The police force have changed their suppliers for their entire police fleet. Audi and Hyundai have for the first time ever, appeared on the suppliers list in a new five year purchasing plan.

They are joining a list of manufacturers which is growing shorter and shorter in a bid to reduce the amount of expenditure on police fleet cars over the coming years by 3m. As it stands, about 5,600 vehicles are currently being purchased by the police force over various models and makes which is costing around 83 million.

However though, the new procurement framework which was set up by the National Association of Police Fleet Managers, means that instead of hundreds of choices of cars for the police force, it has been limited to just 18, which cuts costs by 3.4 million each year.

Suppliers have been chosen according to vehicle specifications such as, how robust the vehicle is, emissions, and health and safety factors. Dr David Horne states " to put the 3.4 million saving into perspective, that is the cost of an average forces entire fleet budget."

Not only has this new procurement scheme saved the force a lot of money but it has also cut down car lead times by 4 weeks. Four suppliers - Vauxhall, Hyundai, Ford and Peugeot will not deliver fully modified cars which meet the national police standards across the UK. For the first time the new scheme also includes all other blue light sectors.

The agreement has come about when a new tyre scheme was put into place for the fleet which saved over 3.1 million, the deals have been struck in an agreement to find nearly 300 million in non-IT related savings by the end of 2013.
