New York - Christmas Starts Here

For over 75 years, the Macy's Day parade has signalled the start of the New York Christmas season

. The parade stems from a European tradition. In the 1920's many of the Macy's department store employees were first generation immigrants, to show their pride in their new American heritage they celebrated with a parade similar to the ones they loved in Europe. The employees marched from 145 Street to 34th Street dressed up as cowboys, clowns and knights. There were professional bands, floats and even live animals borrowed from Central Park Zoo.

Throughout the 1930's the parade expanded, the depression struck crowds reached over one million and lined the streets of the parade route. The appearance of large balloons added to the popularity of the parade, Walt Disney characters floated along the procession, delighting the children waiting to see Santa. The parade stopped in the 1940's as World War II raged on. In 1945 the parade returned and started being televised across America. The entire country sat and watched as the parade marched on throughout the 1950's, after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 the parade was going to be cancelled however it was decided that they could not disappoint the millions of children. Since then the parade has continued to grow, with even more elaborate balloons and celebrity guests appearing to delight the crowds.

The 83rd Macy's Day Parade is set to take place on November 26th with brand new character balloons including Ronald McDonald, Sailor Mickey and even Spider Man. The parade route has been adjusted to begin at 77th Street and end at 7th Avenue. This tradition is just one of the reasons that so many tourist book a New York holiday. The Christmas spirit is truly alive around the city, from the singing Santas on every corner to the extravagant window displays in many of the larger department stores.
