New boat to feature watertight doors

A new boat that has started operating on the Cromarty Firth in Scotland features a number of things

, including watertight doors.

The Cromarty Queen, which it is hoped will attract thousands of extra passengers next summer season, was constructed in Southampton, the Ross-Shire Journal reports.

It is running on the Cromarty-Nigg route and those behind the project hope it will serve for a generation.

All aspects of the vessel, including its offshore doors and watertight doors, were funded by private finance.

It is owned by the Cromarty Ferry Company and is based in an arm of the North Sea.

Managing director of the firm Tom Henderson revealed the vessel was lifted into the water and registered under its name in Inverness, which is located on the north-east coast of Scotland.

Commenting on the ship that preceded this new one, he said: "The Cromarty Rose vessel was getting to a stage where all the money we were making we were spending back on her to bring her up to standard."

For this reason, the company decided to get a new boat to replace her.

In order to complete the vessel, those behind the project managed to get a ship's mortgage to help pay for all the work, including the offshore doors.

Also, a small loan was received from Highland Opportunities and the Cromarty Rose was sold.

He added: "When I was trying to get a grant there was a lot of questions asked about whether there was a demand or a need for a ferry. I feel that with the reaction that no ferry has caused this summer, with all the queries and the significant drop in visitors, that underlines there is a need for the ferry."

Mr Henderson expects the service to have a positive impact on passing trade through the Black Isle and Seaboard villages.
