Next Diversity Lottery is Around the Corner

Every year, the United Statesallows permanent residency to 55

,000 people through its "green card" lottery, more properlyknown as the diversity lottery.This "green card" permits that lucky winner from a country with low rates of immigration to the United Statesto reside and work in the United States. They can bring their spouse and children to the United States and eventually gain citizenship for the entire family. Online registration for the next diversity lottery begins October 5, 2010, at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight time and ends at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on November 3, 2010. For purposes of the upcoming diversity lottery, citizens of the following countries are not permitted to apply as they have exceeded more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the past five years: Brazil, Canada, mainland China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Equador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jamaica, India, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories and Viet Nam.

Other than being a citizen of an eligible country, the diversity entrant is required to have a minimum of a high school education or its equivalent or have, within the past five years, two years of work experience in an occupation requiring two years of training or experience in a qualifying occupation. Participation in the diversity lottery is free.

The diversity lottery does not constitute an amnesty program. An illegal alien is not permitted to apply from within the United States. A government computer will randomly select qualified individualsfor the diversity lottery and they will be notified through the Department of Statediversity lottery website.Further instructions along with applicable fee information is provided. Prior to the actual lottery, a person can check on the status of their application through that website. Those not selected receive no notification.

Applicants may only submit one application. Those submitting more than one application are disqualified. Spouses however, can each submit an application so long as each of them meets eligibility criteria. If only one of the spouses is awarded the diversity visa, the otheris permitted tofollow on the visa of the lucky spouse.

Beware of unscrupulous attorneys, agents or proxies that claim they can increase one's chances of success in the lottery for a fee. The system makes that impossible.
