Nfl Tickets - Chargers Bolster Defense Through Draft
The 2011-2012 NFL season was not one of the best for the San Diego Chargers
, who failed once again to make the playoffs despite some flashing their talent for stretches. But even with a few ups and downs, the Chargers still have a solid team with plenty of talent, even if they are developing a reputation for waning a little bit toward the middle of the season. Some blamed the lack of 2011 success on the quarterback, though it seemed that Philip Rivers was fighting off an injury and was unable to play to his usual level. The main problem, though, was their defense. And rather than bulk up their offense as some critics thought, they instead built up their defense with their draft picks. The team may just have added the firepower they needed to not only sell out NFL tickets, but to make it a winning season.
Melvin Ingram - OLB:
Coming from South Carolina, Ingram has shown his ability to add to whatever defensive line he is on. As the 18th pick in Round 1, the Chargers hope to utilize Ingram's skills to play in their 3-4 defense as pass-rusher. In fact, Ingram happens to be this draft class' most explosive pass-rusher, which bodes well for the Chargers. He is not only physical against the run, which is already a positive asset, but he is able to get into the backfield and pursue the quarterback - his greatest skill, and once much needed by the Chargers. Ingram's explosive athleticism will surely be a big attribute to the rebuilding of the defense for the Chargers.
Kendall Reyes - DT/DE:
Coming out of Connecticut as the Round 2, 49th pick, Reyes looks to do really well when playing five-technique defensive end, which comes from his ability to be an explosive interior penetrator. Reyes is very athletic for his size, is extremely strong, and has a long frame, all perfect assets to use in the defense. He is sure to be an impact player this season and help the Chargers get those much deserved wins.
Brandon Taylor - SS:
Taylor has the potential to be an excellent safety for the Chargers and a great contributor to their special teams. While playing for the LSU Tigers, he showed great potential and was superb as a playmaker. The one skill that makes him an asset for the Chargers is the fact that is an exceptional tackler in run support. San Diego will definitely need him to outshine his LSU records for the team to do well.
Ladarius Green - TE:
Green may need to bulk up a bit before making a real impact on the league, but he is already a threat at downfield receiving. The Chargers are looking to help out an aging Antonio Gates by drafting Green who was also a former basketball player and has both athletic ability and a big size.
By drafting Green, Taylor, Reyes, and Ingram, the San Diego Chargers are looking to bulk up their defense and become a real threat to the league. Combining size, athleticism and pure skill in these new draft picks will help.
