Nfl Tickets - Week One Had A Few Unexpected Qb Performances
While the big names like Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning all shined bright in Week One
, at least from a statistical standpoint, some under-the-radar signal callers also had strong opening weeks. Here's a look at the guys you might have missed.
Vince Young, Tennessee Titans:
It's still way too early to start talking about Young being a top-tier quarterback, but we may need to revise our expectations for Young and the Titans for this season. Though it was only against the Raiders, head coach Jeff Fischer had the perfect game plan for Young to be successful. Young threw the ball just 17 times, completing 14 of those passes, and didn't turn the ball over. Perhaps most importantly for the long-term success of Young is that he did prove capable of throwing the ball down the field when he needed to, including a 56-yard touchdown strike to Nate Washington. It should be obvious enough by now that Young isn't the type of pocket passer who can lead a high-flying passing attack. However, with Chris Johnson toting the rock and the Titans stressing ball control, Young can be highly effective and should help the Titans compete in the division.
Derek Anderson, Arizona Cardinals:
Even though they only played the Rams, some credit has to be given to Anderson. The franchise clearly wouldn't have felt comfortable cutting Matt Leinart if Anderson wasn't ready to step into the starting job, and Anderson did what he had to do to win a road game against a division opponent in week one. In the process, Anderson threw for 297 yards and a touchdown, which was good for a solid QB rating of 85.1. He won't always get to play the Rams but he should also grow stronger as he gets more time as the starting signal caller on his new team. In the future, the Cards also won't ask him to drop back and throw 41 times; as soon as Beanie Wells gets back on the field, the Cards should find a bit more offensive balance.
Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks:
The Seahawks didn't appear to have a lot going for them heading into their week one matchup against the 49ers, a team that many picked to win the division. Just a little more than a week ago, the 'Hawks released their number one wideout, T.J. Houshmanzadeh, and it didn't seem that they had the skill position talent to make much noise this season. Someone forgot to tell that to veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck, who had a very efficient opening game against a good 49ers defense. Hasselbeck completed 18 out of 23 passes for two touchdowns and one pick, which was good for an impressive rating of 108; Hasselbeck was one of only a handful of Week One quarterbacks to break 100 for a QB rating. The end result was Hasselbeck badly outplaying 49ers quarterback Alex Smith and a 31-6 shellacking to start the season. If healthy, Hasselbeck is probably still the best signal caller in the division.
Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles:
When Kolb went down with injury against the Packers, it seemed that the game was over. But the Packers also didn't count on Michael Vick to play nearly as well as he did. Despite being down 20-3 at one point, Vick led the Eagles back and made it interesting against one of the most talented teams in the league. Vick ran for more than 100 yards in the game, bringing back flashes of when he was one of the best sellers of NFL tickets in the league. What was more important, however, was how well he threw from the pocket. Vick completed 16 of 24 passes and a touchdown - good for a rating of 101. Defenses should be able to make some adjustments, but Vick looked sharp in Week One, even though they still lost the game 27-20.
David Garrard, Jacksonville Jags:
Garrard answered critics in a big way during a 24-17 opening day win at home against the Broncos. Throwing for three touchdowns and no picks, Garrard controlled the ball and proved that he could get the Jags' offense into the endzone without having to completely rely on Maurice Jones-Drew. If Garrard continues to play well, the Jags are going to be much better than people originally anticipated.
