Nissan East Providence dealer likes new Microsoft capabilities in vehicles

Many of us already depend on Microsoft more than we would like to, although in many cases we would be lost without it. But now Microsoft is poised to enter the auto arena by creating software to control and sync various communications and entertainment systems.

The new software, Windows Embedded Automotive 7, can control the audio system in your vehicle, connect personal music devices with Bluetooth and sync with smartphones to allow you into your calendar or contact list. Users can run the system with voice commands or via touch screen.

Since Microsoft does everything in a big way, it's also offering car makers its Silverflight media player as an alternative to the Flash player. Microsoft Silverflight is capable of better 2D and 3D graphics on the video screens in the vehicle. Nissan East Providence customers will appreciate the option of this upgrade.

This is big business and software companies are scrambling to get in on the ground floor or systems communications for autos. Of course, Microsoft has some advantage - size and reputation count in this business as does the ability to deliver.

Warwick used car buyers may not find this technology in any pre-owned vehicles, but no doubt Microsoft in its quest to satisfy customer needs and make a few more dollars will find a way to retrofit systems of cars that don't come with this software. Hmm . . .

"Consumers are increasingly demanding access to new multimedia content, productivity solutions and connected services for entertainment and communication from the in-vehicle system, similar to what they expect from their other devices," explained Gartner Inc. representative Thilo Koslowski. Well, it's a bit of a blanket statement to say that consumers are demanding this technology. I have to say I am surviving just fine without it, but I'm probably too old to be in their demographic.

Nissan hasn't jumped into this with both feet yet, but the Nissan Leaf electric will utilize Microsoft in powering the entertainment center and also to run a program that will allow drivers to find the closest charging station. Meanwhile, Fiat cars in Australia use a system called Blue&Me that responds to voice commands.

Right now the focus for many Nissan East Providence customers may be on getting the new electric Leaf. If you aren't already on the list you will probably be waiting awhile, but demand will lead production, I suppose. If you do buy a Leaf you will get to experience some of the system control software.

If you biggest concern is a reliable, comfortable car and you like a touch of luxury, visit your Warwick used car dealer and check out the selection. Most of the pre-owned models will have plenty of technology and if they don't have a fancy touch screen, it's just one less thing to learn.
