Nothing Beats Planning: Setting up SEO before Building a Website
Currently, no studies prove the idea that setting SEO strategies before building a website makes SEO more successful. However, it would be reasonable to plan strategies before turning these into reality. The basic idea of drafting a proposal before submitting a design to an advertising company is the same with outlining SEO methods before actually building a website.
That's why many SEO firms are more excited in helping out start-up companies than established businesses. There are things that are difficult to change when optimizing an old website, like domain and business names. Such elements are major factors that affect a business, so modifying these two may involve changing the business' brand and identity as well.
There are many advantages, of course, in planning before jumping into the battlegrounds. Niches and target markets should be studied extensively. I am saying this because I had clients who thought of target markets like grocery products. They pick a target market and stubbornly stick to marketing their products and services to it, without even considering the real targets of their business. Determining a target market requires research, just like choosing your business location. Identifying and knowing your niche and target market are important in your initial SEO processes, especially in keyword research.
Learning about your target market is also the key in choosing your website's design. Would you consider a gothic-inspired website if you're reselling caramel candy for kids? Your website is your business' online identity. Failing to identify your business' target market will leave you empty-headed in front of the web designer. The designer should know your business' goals, your business' target market, and your personal preference in design. Lacking at least one of these will leave you and the designer dumbfounded during the website design process.
Without keyword research, how can you come up with relevant content? Without content, how will search engines find you? Step-by step planning plays a great part in your whole SEO campaign. Keyword research is the root of all your SEO processes. Without proper keyword research, your website's content and your website's identity to search engines remain weak and unidentified. Without proper keywords, writing content is useless and scattering links in social media profiles is futile. Your SEO campaigns become completely ineffective.
What I always do is grab a pad of paper and a pen before building a website for a client. Of course, building a website means you have to consider SEO, design, relevance and ROI. All these factors should be considered in the website creation process. Whenever I'm on the phone with a client, I write important details on paper, not just the client's preferences, but all the important factors that build their business.
Each time I have to optimize my clients' old sites, or sites that were the works of fake SEO firms, I always I'd handled the websites from the beginning. Creating a new website with SEO, aesthetics, and ROI in mind is far better than optimizing an old site. Although the fulfillment remains the same, building a new website is easier than reconstructing one.
