Nursing: A Coed Job
For 26 years, this lady has been a nurse. Back in the day, she saw both her grandparents suffer from Parkinson's disease. Since they all lived in the same household she was used to taking care of them.
It is at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where you can find her working. She moves in any department depending where they need her as she is a floating nurse. Many hospitals are still running on tight schedules despite the US economy showing signs of slowing down. Patients expect more from hospitals these days she says. Many hospitals operate at lightning speed as the public demands are increasing and the patients are getting sicker.
The amounts of people that enter the hospital are mostly old people or those that get sent in the emergency room. Also, the nursing students who are supposed to be training in the hospital have decreased. When we look at what is going on in the economy in recent times this will lead to an increased demand for health care workers. All a person needs to do it to understand what a nurse really does and he or she will definitely have a better outlook on it. Even though nurses do more now than before, the image that people have on them are still the same.
Even if there is a growing need for nurses, the number of students and the graduates will not be able to compensate for the demand says the director at a nursing school in Moline. An increase in the number of uninsured patients due to job loss creates a higher need for nurses in emergency rooms.
With 2.5 million registered nurses nationwide, nursing is the nation's largest health care profession. A handmaid to the doctor is how many people see nurses and nothing more.
There are only a few but men have slowly entered the nursing industry. About 5.9 percent of registered nurses were male in 2000 according to the US department of Health and Human Services.
Typically a nurse experiences greater patient loads mandatory overtime and job hazards such as needle stick injuries, violent patients and back injury from moving patients. Since it is very demanding the operating and emergency room slots are have to fill. It is not new for hospitals to be cutting deals with nurses.
On a positive note, this can encourage more people to enter the service industry. Though nursing entails caring for people at the same time it can offer one a substantial income and good benefits. What they can get from their patients is something nurses cannot put a price on and is what makes their job worthwhile.
