Obama Grants: A College Education Within Reach

If you want to be successful, getting a good education is a good start

. Even before he became President, Barack Obama spoke about the need to make education a priority. Scholarships and grants are only a small part of the education system makeover.

One familiar part of the economic meltdown is the rise in college tuition and other costs. Scholarship packages rarely cover the full amount for tuition, books and housing. Unfortunately some students turn away from higher education because it's too expensive. Single, working moms are a big section of this group. Not only does educating mothers help provide for their families, but it also improves the workforce. It's important to the President and that's why he's implemented a program for scholarships for mothers. If you've heard of Obama grants for moms, know that people are referring to Federal Pell Grants. In the 2009-2010 school year, students could get a grant of up to $5,350. For mothers and other students, this is increase of available money is valuable help. With these grants for moms, they can pay for tuition, books or any other school-related expenses.

Another incentive to consider is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax credit, the first $4,000 of college expenses are free. At less expensive schools in particular this is a big credit. A grant and a tax break could be just the thing to help students like working single moms. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school.

Obama's efforts to improve education show that he takes this issue seriously. The stimulus plan that passed has some provisions to make the college loan process easier. There is more government emphasis on properly preparing students for their future at all levels of education. Since many overlook community colleges, there is emphasis on increasing their effectiveness and appeal. A 2-year degree or the time spent learning a technical school from a community college can be a tremendous asset.

In his Reclaiming the American Dream speech in 2007, Obama said, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. Even though Obama's grants for moms get much attention they are certainly not the only important opportunity being offered. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
