Obama Grants: A College Education Within Reach

It's widely accepted that education is important to having a successful future

. President Obama is a good example, and he has shown his commitment to helping others. Free money through grants and scholarships is only the beginning.

Although the economy has dramatically fallen, college prices have continued to rise for many years. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. Unfortunately some students turn away from higher education because it's too expensive. One group that is particularly hit hard is single mothers. Helping single mothers get an education helps their families and future employers. It's important to the President and that's why he's implemented a program for scholarships for mothers. If you've heard of Obama grants for moms, know that people are referring to Federal Pell Grants. With these grants, college-bound students can receive over $5,000 to pay for school. The primary goal is to encourage single moms to return to school, and by 2012 they could receive as much as $5,400. The scholarship money covers practically all school-related expenses.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is also a very valuable program. This tax credit makes a way for students to write off the first $4,000 of their education costs. The $4,000 grant is especially great for low-income students. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. Another great factor is that students aren't particularly targeted based on what or where they study. Diversity is encouraged. Taking away a little of the financial burden of college is a helpful way to get more students enrolled.

The President has demonstrated that he considers this issue a priority. With some changes to the lending system, many graduate and undergraduate loans will be less costly. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. A 2-year degree or the time spent learning a technical school from a community college can be a tremendous asset.

In his 2007 Reclaiming the American Dream speech, Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. Even though Obama's grants for moms get much attention they are certainly not the only important opportunity being offered. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
