. The President has on many occasions emphasized the need for a strong education system. One major part of the effort is to make available to students more free money for college.

College expenses continue to increase even as the economy slumps. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. Low-income students suffer the most if they are unable to secure enough scholarship or grant money. Single, working moms are a big section of this group. More education helps single mothers achieve on their jobs and take care of their families. The President believes in this and has begun a mission to create scholarships for moms. There is no difference between Federal Pell Grants and Obama grants. The name "Obama grants" came as a result of the President's emphasis on educating moms. In the 2009-2010 school year, students could get a grant of up to $5,350. This is over $1,000 above the previous maximum, and it's a big help to moms who want to return to school. The scholarship money covers practically all school-related expenses.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is also a very valuable program. Under this incentive program, education costs up to $4,000 are cleared. Especially for less expensive schools, $4,000 could be a significant help for a student. A grant and a tax break could be just the thing to help students like working single moms. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. With more incentives, more ambitious adults will realize their goal to get a college degree.

The President has demonstrated that he considers this issue a priority. The stimulus plan that passed has some provisions to make the college loan process easier. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. Since many overlook community colleges, there is emphasis on increasing their effectiveness and appeal. Community colleges are more than a stepping stone on the way to a university. They are valuable institutions.

"We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." Those are the words of President Obama in his 2007 speech Reclaiming the American Dream. President Obama has shown he is serious about action. If the goal is to educate as many as possible, making grants available for mothers is a good step. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
