Obama Scholarships: Putting Education First

For many people, a bright future starts with good education

. President Obama is a good example, and he has shown his commitment to helping others. One major part of the effort is to make available to students more free money for college.

For decades, college prices have steadily increased. Schools don't offer scholarships to ever student to cover necessary expenses. Many potential students suffer and are unable to afford to go to college. A large number of these people are working mothers. Educating women and single moms is important to increase the workforce and help provide for children and families. Creating college grants for moms is one way the President is dealing with this issue. Although they are the same, many people refer to Federal Pell grants as Obama grants. To help with university costs, a student can earn more than $5,000. This is over $1,000 above the previous maximum, and it's a big help to moms who want to return to school. With these grants for moms, they can pay for tuition, books or any other school-related expenses.

Another incentive to consider is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax credit, the first $4,000 of college expenses are free. This is a worthy incentive, especially for schools that are less expensive. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. With a few less money worries, more single mothers can attend college.

Increasing educational opportunity and performance is undoubtedly one of the President's goals. With some changes to the lending system, many graduate and undergraduate loans will be less costly. In addition, the government is focusing on helping schools improve teaching and students improve performance. Since many overlook community colleges, there is emphasis on increasing their effectiveness and appeal. Community college is important to prepare students for a 4-year college but also to prepare them for a 2-year degree or technical skill.

In a 2007 speech called Reclaiming the American Dream, the President said that making college education more available is "the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. Grants for moms are just a small but vital part of the education mission.
