Obama Scholarships for Moms: Education Is Top Priority

For many people, a bright future starts with good education

. Since his campaign to become President, Barack Obama has made education a key issue. Grants and scholarships are just the beginning of efforts to try to make over higher education. One familiar part of the economic meltdown is the rise in college tuition and other costs. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. With high costs looming, many young adults can't afford to go to a university. Single, working moms are a big section of this group. Helping single mothers get an education helps their families and future employers. The President believes in this and has begun a mission to create scholarships for moms. Although they are the same, many people refer to Federal Pell grants as Obama grants. To help with university costs, a student can earn more than $5,000. Before Pell grants maxed out at about $4,000. These grants can be used to cover many of the miscellaneous college expenses. Another incentive to consider is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax program, the first $4,000 of community college or university expenses are free. This is a worthy incentive, especially for schools that are less expensive. A grant and a tax break could be just the thing to help students like working single moms. Another great factor is that students aren't particularly targeted based on what or where they study. Diversity is encouraged. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school. Making more efforts to improve education opportunities is the best way for President Obama to show that he values them. With the recent passage of the economic stimulus plan, a lot of college loans will be offered by the government. In addition, the government is focusing on helping schools improve teaching and students improve performance. The President believes community colleges need to become viable options. Community colleges are more than a stepping stone on the way to a university. They are valuable institutions. In his 2007 Reclaiming the American Dream speech, Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. Scholarships for moms are only a small part of the mission to help educate more people. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
