Old and New iPad 2
In a market very quickly filling up with numerous devices operated mainly operated by Android, other contenders are preparing to move in. However, whilst this is happening Apple subtly upgrades and is set to release a new version of its iconic tablet, proving that it is not quantity but quality that leads.
iPad Key Points
The iPad was launched in April 2010. The latest iPad upgrade is 4.2 which can be downloaded from the Apple website. As iPad 2 is on the horizon is it worth remembering the key points that made it the world's favourite tablet PC:
Interface design Apple state that the iPad's Multi-Touch interface was designed for "the most natural pointing device ever: your finger". The user has absolute control over everything whether it is tapping, dragging, expanding or performing a task; the interface is created with simplicity in mind to cater for all audiences.
iOS 4 iPad's operating system makes the iPad powerful and innovative, and allows the user to perform all features effortlessly such as Multitasking and using Folders.
Apps for a tablet to be successful not only with users but also developers, there needs to be a wide range of apps. Much like Android, Apple gives third-party developers a rich set of tools and APIs. The Apple App Store currently holds over 350,000 apps and games (which is the highest out of all app stores). To stop the home screen filling up quickly this is where the Folders becomes involved and is very much like new the features of Internet Explorer 9.
Wireless Connectivity A key point for a tablet is to be able to take it anywhere. It has to be lightweight (the basic iPad weight is 1.5 pounds), and also has to connect for browsing and AirPrint. AirPrint is Apple's feature that allows a user to print from an iPad wirelessly. AirPlay is another as it allows the user to stream digital media wirelessly from the iPad to Apple TV and AirPlay-enabled speakers. So movies and photos can be watched from a widescreen TV. Alternatively Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR technology is also included.
Data Protection and Security IT departments have to have a disaster recovery strategy in place, why shouldn't anyone with a wireless device too. Find My iPad is the feature that helps you locate your missing iPad and protects its data. It is now free on any iPad running iOS 4.2.3. Once you set it up, you can find your lost iPad on a map, display a message on its screen, remotely set a passcode lock, and initiate a remote wipe to delete your data. If the iPad is recovered then everything can be restored from the last backup.
iPad 2
In amongst the new tablet introductions for 2011, most of which are operated by Android, Apple is going to release iPad 2. Apple has sent out press invites confirming that the new iPad 2 will be revealed on 2 March. The UK event is set to take place at the BBC Television Centre in London,
Apple are keeping the new features secret but several online publications are reporting "leaked" specifications are showing a screen size from anywhere between 7" and 10" (the current is 9.7" diagonal), an SD port, a built-in video camera and Face Time video conferencing standard, an aluminum back, and similar weight and battery life to the current model. None of this information has been confirmed by Apple.
Up until now the only competitor that has any substance to the iPad is the Samsung Galaxy Tab. However, there has been an outstanding amount of media coverage for other contender tablets set to join the iPad and Galaxy Tab, such as Motorola Xoom, RIM Playbook, HP TouchPad, and Dell Streak as well as other hybrid netbook tablet PCs. Even though the specification has not been confirmed Apple are preparing to sell between 400,000 and 600,000 iPad 2 devices in 2011.
It would not be a surprise to see that Apple is also trying to target businesses with its enterprise-ready features, powerful security and industry-standard VPN protocols. At the moment RIM Blackberry(Blackberry battery) still has a hold on this side of the market.
As well as accessibility Apple has also kept the price competitive, as the starting price for the current version is $499 and the Motorola Xoom will start at $800. Even though it is slightly bigger and has two cameras, depending on what the specification for the iPad 2 is, Motorola could be pricing itself too high. Despite the new models being released, Apple has coolly kept to one model where Android (even though it is an operating system) has to incorporate itself into many. This may prove very profitable over Apple in the long run, but it has many overheads and device manufacturers now. Apple manufactures the iPad hardware and the operating system itself, and where other organisations such as Microsoft and Dell are stepping on to the ladder, they have a lot of catching up to do to get anywhere near the credibility of Apple's iPad
