There used to be a time when even an air conditioner in the car was considered a luxury

. As technology advances whats revolutionary eventually becomes common. Glancing through car history the statement is proven correct. More so in the current scenario when each car maker is trying to out shine the other by providing top of the segment features.

What was once the pride of luxury cars is now available in hatchbacks and has become a standard feature of most cars. First the power steering replaced the traditional one and in came the tilt steering option. Hatchbacks like the recently launched Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Chevrole Beat or the just updated Maruti Wagon R have various features that used to come at a very high cost earlier.Body coloured front and rear bumpers, airconditioning with heater and vents for rear seat passengers, power steering, remote fuel tank open, three point seatbelts for front and rear seats, optional sunroofs, fine upholstery, carpet on the floor and extensive use of leather are some standards that were earlier confined to luxury cars.

Tilt-adjustable steering wheel, height-adjustable drivers seat, GPS, ipod connectivity, Bluetooth and car phones are some latest in the comfort category features that have become a norm with car makers.As times are changing the car makers are paying more attention to safety and features like dual airbags (driver and passenger), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EPS have also become a vital part to be placed in the features list of any new car.

Another important feature that has altered a great deal is the colour of the cars. Some car makers offer a variety of hues for the colour loving Indian buyers. While in the olden days white was royal and almost 50 per cent cars were white.

Of course, the engine refinement is also a common thing. Less polluting engines that give better fuel economy is the norm of the day and soon battery driven cars are going to be everywhere. So, it wont be an exaggeration to say that what is revolutionary today becomes common place tomorrow.
