One Generation, Two Faces: Wimax Vs Lte

Right now is an interesting time to be paying attention to high speed wireless Internet market in the United States

. At this very moment, the future of this market is in the process of being determined. The latest generation of wireless data networks, the fourth generation, promises to be the best yet, with talks of broadband connection speeds that are nearly or just as fast as those you might get through a wired broadband Internet service at home or in your office. In the United States, the fourth generation of wireless data networks can basically be divided into two basic technology camps. These camps are WiMax and LTE, and both come with their pros and cons.

These two types of technology are in a heated competition to be the first to satisfy the rapidly increasing demand for mobile and high speed broadband Internet connections in the United States (and throughout the world, for that matter). One thing that these two technologies have in common, aside from the generation they are competing to dominate, is their fundamental wireless standard. Both of these technologies utilize the same standard, which is known as OFDM (short for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). This standard is a way of breaking data down into small units to be quickly transmitted. So how do these two technologies differ?

One thing that they do not have in common is speed. In terms of sheer speed, LTE (short for Long Term Evolution) has WiMax (short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) beat, and by somewhat of a long shot. But that is not the only factor determining which of these two technologies is to come out of this race as the winner.

One edge that WiMax has over LTE is its current availability. If you are looking for an immediate transition into the next generation with the help of high speed wireless Internet service that you can access from your smart phone or laptop computer, then this service is a convenient, easy option. To date, many devices that are compatible with this type of service have already been introduced to the market. In addition to being widely accessible, this technology has also been touted as very user friendly.

If you want the ultra fast speeds promised by LTE technology, you may have to wait a while. It is rumored that LTE download connections can get up to speeds of as much as 100 Mbps (that is a whole lot when compared to WiMaxs maximum speed of about 1 Mbps). Speeds as fast as that would make it possible to download 10 minutes worth of MP3 files in just one second. To give you a point of reference, it would take over 10 minutes to download the same amount using a 1 Mbps connection. Still, these mindblowing LTE powers are still in the works and have not yet been fully realized. So, if you are looking for a service plan that you can sign up for and start enjoying today, it would be better to look elsewhere.
