Online advertising is a form of promotion that uses the Internet and World Wide Web for the expressed purpose of delivering marketing messages to attract customers. Examples of online advertising include contextual ads on search engine results pages, banner ads, Rich Media Ads, social network advertising, interstitial ads, online classified advertising, advertising networks and e-mail marketing, including e-mail spam.

This form of advertising was made immensely popular by Google. It involves ads in plain text with links. Such ads are amongst the most widely used and are displayed in search engine result pages of Google as well.

Banner Ads, Rich Media Ads

These are the usual form of advertising on websites that has been around for as long as the internet has been around. It simply involves having static or animated flash or gif banners that display a particular message and direct a person to a website.

Social Network Advertising

This is mainly advertising done on social networks such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Orkut. It is handled by the social network or in the case of Orkut and to some extent MySpace by Google Adsense and Twitter by third parties.

Online Classified Advertising

This is the form that is also very popular. With the best example being Craiglist. It is similar to classifieds in a newspaper or magazine.

Advertising Networks

This is advertising done through networks such as the popular Google Adsense, Yahoo! Publisher Networ, Chitika and others. These connect advertisers with publishers.

Email Advertising

Last but not least we have email advertising . The ethical form in which it is done to a mailing list with the consent of the user (opt-in') or that done without the consent (spam').
